The Orwell Bridge Series

The Orwell Bridge Series 2013

Mixed media on primed Fabriano pape

These images show a series of paintings I have created in my studio. They are based on the Orwell Bridge which crosses the River Orwell in Suffolk, near the port of Ipswich.

The bridge carries around 60,000 vehicles daily and when it's closed, due to bad weather for example, the roads in and around Ipswich suffer considerable congestion.

Constructed of pre-stressed concrete, this bridge has a span of 190 metres and is 24 metres wide. The building of this feat of engineering began in October 1979 and wasn't completed until the December of 1982.  During this time the bridge's pilings had to be sunk 40 meters into the river's bed

These paintings show my exploration of the subject and they illustrate the development and use of my visual language.  I use mixed media on hand stretched, primed paper and work freely to create an expressionistic impression of the subject. In this romantic interpretation of the bridge, the structure is sometimes incomplete, inviting the viewer to read and complete the painting in their own way.

Movement and energy is present in each painting and I fascinated by the concept that a bridge provides not only a means of access but also a means of escape.

The paintings below are approximately 30 x 21cm
