Yorkshire Viaducts
In March I spent a day drawing on the Settle and Carlisle Railway-Yorkshire. I recorded my responses to the viaducts that were built to enable the railway line to complete its journey across the Dales from Settle to Carlisle. Back in the studio, I made a series of small paintings that interpret these strong architectural structures that manipulated the often sparse rural landscape in an age when technology was at its most basic. An effort was made to convey both the energy, strength and rhythm of these monumental bridges that connect the undulating contours of the landscape.
