The Pier - Santa Barbara, USA

In May 2012 I worked on a series of drawings on the beach at Santa Barbara, California.  The focus of my drawing was the pier as a piece of architecture; the work produced includes both blind and sighted drawings.

A pier - in architectural terms,  encompasses any elevated structure, such as bridges with supports and also walkways with supports; these can be piles or pillars.

Whilst working on this beach, one of the challenges resulted from my close proximity to the structure of the pier whilst the strength of its vertical supports contrasted strongly with the undulating line of the mountains and the willowy verticals of the iconic palm trees.

The drawings show the development of a visual language that illustrates the connectivity the bridge and demonstrates a manipulation of the seascape, as it links land to sea.
